Bono vs Medina
TKO
W - Round 3
Wilmington's
own Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor 12-11-2,
6kos stunned David Medina 14-2, 8kos with a
monstrous 3rd round KO in Mayetta, Kansas at
the Harrah Casino, winning the WBC USNBC Super
Welterweight Championship Belt. Medina was taken
to the hospital after the fight for precautionary
observations.
Bono
dropped Medina twice in the first round. I actually
believe that he knocked him down three times
in round one and should have been awarded the
victory and crowned the champion then, as the
"three knockdown rule" was in effect.
However, the impending outcome was not to be
denied, only delayed. As the fight went on,
it was clear that Sonny had control.
As
mentioned, the end came in round three…
Medina got caught trying to rush in and was
met by a crunching right that sent him sprawling
to the canvas. Medina struggled to his feet,
but staggered across the ring and went back
down and the fight was stopped as medical personnel
was called into the ring to tend to the fallen
now ex-champ.
Sonny
has been on a mission and the word is spreading
that this young man has plenty of pop in his
punch. In his previous fight, he dropped 2 Time
World Champion Bronco McKart in the first round.
That fight went the distance with the decision
going to McKart. However, all would agree that
Sonny was very much in that fight.
Congratulations
to Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor for
earning his title and we wish you continued
success in your career. Also, we wish a speedy
recovery to David Medina who fought bravely
in defending his championship. He has nothing
to be ashamed of - It was just Sonny's night.

LANCASTER
- MARCH 2006 |
|
- Bono
(10-8-2, 5 KOs) blew through Luis Santiago
(18-8, 11 KOs), stopping him in 1:18 of the
first round. The fight ended as a result of
a devastating barrage of blows punctuated
by a vicious body shot that sent Santiago
to the canvas for good. Sonny Bono left no
doubts that this was his night to shine. G-Town
solutes one of its favorites.

DOVER
DOWNS - FEBRUARY 2006 |
- Despite
understanding the business angle of Sonny’s
decision to call him out, Larry Marks, a former
gym mate of Clarence Taylor’s, was obviously
extra motivated for their fight at Dover Downs.
It was a back and forth battle. Although Marks
controlled most the 6th round and once had
Sonny Bono staggered, Taylor shook the cobwebs
off in the 7th. Marks (28-7; 16KO’s)
took the round off, except for dancing around
and showboating. The 8 round middleweight
fight ended with both fighters rallying and
Taylor landing more punches. The judges turned
in tallies of 76-76, 77-75 and 77-75 for Marks
by majority decision.

OTHER
HIGHLIGHTS |
|
- Toms
River native, Bear Sanders, was shockingly
upset by Clarence Taylor of Wilmington, DE
via 2nd round TKO. Midway through the 2nd
round Taylor landed a short left hook which
dropped Sanders on his back, he rose on unsteady
legs, and Taylor pounced landing several shots
punctuated with a clean right that froze Sanders
and dropped him face first onto the canvas.
He bravely rose, but referee Randy Neumann
had seen enough stopping the contest at the
1:02 mark of the 2nd round. With the win Taylor
moves to 5-2-2 (3KO’s). Sanders, suffers
his first loss as a professional, and falls
to 4-1 (4KO’s).
- Popular
Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor, of
Wilmington, DE, evened his record to 1-1,
with 1 KO, when he stopped the debuting Mike
Dougherty, of Scranton, PA at 2:07 of the
2nd round of a 4 round light heavyweight bout.
- Local
favorite Clarence "Sonny Bono" (that's
right, Sonny Bono) Taylor defeated wily veteran
Verdell Smith by decision after four. If Taylor
keeps his winning streak alive, the competition
for "most popular man in Delaware"
may start getting pretty stiff. George Thorogood,
step aside. And take your Destroyers with
you.
